Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 on a momentous night of top-class Tennis at the US Open to win his first Grand Slam trophy and claim the #1 spot in the ATP’s World Men’s Tennis Rankings.
Alcaraz played six matches over the course of 20 hours and 19 minutes, winning three of them in five sets in a row to advance to his maiden Grand Slam final. He didn’t appear to be exhausted, though, as he defeated Ruud.
A 19-year-old has not won the US Open for the first time since Pete Sampras, then 19 won the tournament in 1990 becoming the youngest Grand Slam champion since fellow countryman Rafael Nadal, also 19 who claimed the trophy at Roland Garros in 2005.
