A complete transformation has come to the Las Raiders lineup as a response to the unsettling 2022 season which the team endured.
The Raiders started the 2022 NFL season with a 2–7 record – culminating in a 6–11 record and missing the playoffs – failing to improve on their 10–7 record from the previous season and logging their first losing football season since 2019.
For 2023, General Manager of the Raiders Dave Ziegler, along with head coach Josh McDaniels are leading a Raiders overhaul. They made a crucial change at the quarterback position, setting off a series of big changes this offseason.
As Las Vegas enters the second year of the Ziegler-McDaniels era, the roster is gradually aligning with the vision of the former New England Patriots members. Although not fully realized yet, the transformation is underway.
Amid speculation about their future, the dynamic duo of Ziegler and McDaniels aren’t under pressure. Owner Mark Davis maintains a long-term perspective and is willing to let management and coaching staff steer the Raiders back on winning course.
Key Raiders Departures
Derek Carr, Quarterback: Despite high hopes fueled by his connection with elite wide receiver Davante Adams, Carr struggled to adapt to McDaniels’ style. A poor performance in Pittsburgh marked the end of his nine-year stint as the Raiders’ quarterback, culminating in a disappointing interception.
Darren Waller (Tight End): An exceptional mismatch weapon, Waller’s absence due to injury hampered his impact in 2022. McDaniels’ offense demands versatile tight ends who can block and catch, a skill set Waller lacked. He was traded to the New York Giants for the 100th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Mack Hollins (Wide Receiver): Rising from special teams ace to the No. 2 receiver due to injuries, Hollins thrived in 2022. With 690 yards and four touchdowns on 57 catches, he showcased his ability as a receiver. He joined the Atlanta Falcons, leaving the Raiders in search of a special teams replacement.
Rock Ya-Sin (Cornerback): The departure of the Raiders’ top cornerback led Ya-Sin to the Baltimore Ravens. Acquired through a trade with the Colts, Ya-Sin displayed effectiveness in coverage despite playing only 11 games. His departure strained the already thin cornerback depth due to injuries.
Key Raiders Team Additions for 2023/24
Jimmy Garoppolo, Quarterback: Garoppolo’s arrival shifts the Raiders’ red zone dynamics. With his quick decision-making and penchant for rapid passes, he’s poised to alter the red zone struggles. His familiarity with McDaniels’ scheme enhances his efficiency inside the 20-yard line. The timing of his return from foot surgery and potential game count are the remaining queries, given his past injury and absence history.
Michael Mayer, Tight End: Replacing Waller, Mayer offers a complete skill set. Selected at No. 35 overall, he’s a versatile target for Garoppolo, excelling in route running, catching, and blocking. His all-around prowess aligns with McDaniels’ preferences and bolsters the Raiders’ run game. Mayer’s inclusion transforms the team’s offensive approach.
Tyree Wilson, Defensive End: Despite Jones’ underwhelming impact, the Raiders bolstered their pass rush with Wilson, the No. 7 overall pick. Boasting exceptional physical attributes, including an impressive wingspan, he brings explosive power and speed. Wilson aims to enhance the defense’s takeaway and quarterback pressure, complementing Maxx Crosbyto make a formidable duo.
Duke Shelley, Cornerback: Shelley’s addition aims to revive the Raiders’ shutdown cornerback tradition. Despite his smaller stature, he boasts a productive track record and a confident mentality. Transitioning from the Vikings, Shelley’s minimal concessions in completions and yardage showcase his impact. His success could echo the Vikings’ wise use of him beyond nickel duties. Las Vegas’ investment in Shelley holds promise for defensive dividends.
How these vast roster updates affect this season’s NFL standings remains to be seen.
