The Falcons – Last Season
Last season the Atlanta Falcons record was 7-10-0 in the regular season, placing 4th in NFC South Division. They went 6-3 at home and 1-7 on the road.
Notable Changes in the Atlanta Falcons Roster for 2023/24 Season
Quarterback Marcus Mariota and Wide Receiver Olamide Zaccheaus joined the Philadelphia Eagles. The commencement of the 2022 season witnessed an impressive six-game run where Marcus Mariota admirably guided the Falcons’ offensive plays, propelling them to a commendable top-10 overall pace. However, the latter part of the season took an unfortunate turn.
In a surprising twist, Mariota found himself benched in favor of rookie Desmond Ridder, who is set to lead the team this forthcoming season. Mariota’s departure from the team ensued shortly after this change.
During 2022, Olamide Zaccheaus, previously an undrafted free agent, effectively secured the position of Atlanta’s second-best receiver. Notably, he displayed remarkable on-field chemistry with Mariota. Regrettably, this chemistry didn’t seem to translate to the games where Ridder was at the helm during the final four matches. Consequently, Zaccheaus was not re-signed during the offseason.
Cornerback Casey Hayward‘s current status is unattached free-agent: The expectations for Casey Hayward were significantly high in terms of bringing stability to an exceptionally youthful and untested secondary, particularly outside of A.J. Terrell, during the 2022 season. Hayward exhibited a promising start, only to encounter a season-ending injury that led to his placement on the Injured Reserve after six weeks of play. During the subsequent offseason, Atlanta decided to release Hayward, a move that contributed to a $5 million relief in salary cap allocation.
Cornerback Isaiah Oliver leaves the Falcons & finds a new home at the San Francisco 49ers: Taking on the role of Atlanta’s starting slot cornerback in 2022, Isaiah Oliver’s performance witnessed its share of ups and downs, with appearances in 12 games. While the specifics of any potential offers from Atlanta remain uncertain, Oliver ultimately opted to sign with the San Francisco 49ers during the current offseason.
Staff Changes
Defensive coordinator Dean Pees announced his retirement (for the third time). The Falcons’ defensive unit faced a significant blow as Dean Pees, the esteemed defensive coordinator, revealed his decision to retire during this offseason. Over the past two years, the renowned coach played an instrumental role in turning around one of the NFL’s weakest defenses. However, Pees has now chosen to conclude his illustrious coaching career.
