Since the Tom Brady era concluded, the Patriots reached the playoffs only once in three years, suffering a swift exit with a 47-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills

Patriots team owner Robert Kraft recently expressed frustration, yearning to break a cycle of disappointment: “It bothers me that we haven’t won a playoff game in the last three years” he emphasized at the NFL annual meeting in March.

After a disappointing NFL season in 2022, the Patriots are determined to reclaim a playoff spot this year. They’ve overhauled their coaching staff and bolstered their lineup with impactful additions on both sides of the football during a busy off-season.

This season the Patriots are brimming with internal optimism fueled by their off-season reinforcements.

Let’s examine staff changes and player acquisitions and trades along with notable departures, shaping the key roles for the 2023 season in Foxborough.

Notable Departures from New England Patriots for 2023

Devin McCourty, a mainstay in the Patriots’ secondary since 2009, will be absent for the first time. His departure means more than just losing talent; the team is also without a key communicator in the secondary and a significant locker room leader. Rather than directly replacing McCourty with a pure free safety, the Patriots seem inclined to adopt a committee approach. This committee will feature players like Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips, retained Jabrill Peppers, Joshuah Bledsoe, and Jalen Mills, who transitioned to a safety role after two years as a cornerback.

Jakobi Meyers, while not surprisingly departing in free agency, raised eyebrows by signing a reasonable three-year deal worth up to $33 million with Las Vegas. Despite not being an explosive athlete, Meyers consistently contributed to the Patriots, notably becoming the first receiver since Wes Welker to lead the team in receiving yards for three consecutive seasons. Now, the Patriots must seek an alternative source for a dependable slot receiver.

Key Additions for the New England Patriots in 2023

Bill O’Brien: A major off-season addition, Bill O’Brien takes on the role of offensive coordinator after last season’s coaching experiments faltered. Bringing experience to the offensive side, O’Brien’s stint at Alabama is expected to influence the Patriots’ playbook, especially with Mac Jones benefiting from the partnership.

JuJu Smith-Schuster: To fill the void left by Jakobi Meyers, New England secured JuJu Smith-Schuster on a similar three-year deal. More dynamic than Meyers, Smith-Schuster boasts better yards after the catch and tackling metrics, potentially adding explosiveness to the offense.

Mike Gesicki: New England capitalized on the quiet tight end market by signing Mike Gesicki to an incentive-heavy one-year contract. Under Bill O’Brien’s guidance, Gesicki is anticipated to be a key contributor to pushing the team up to the top of the 2023/24 NFL standings –  forming a potent duo with Hunter Henry.

Defensive Rookies: Despite a strong defense last season, the Patriots strengthened their unit with their top three picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez is poised to start immediately, adding depth and talent.

Keion White bolsters the defensive line, while Marte Mapu, a versatile linebacker/safety, showcased promise in OTAs and minicamp, brings versatility.
